Deciduous shrub with dark green leaves on arching branches that will easily root with good contact with the soil. Forms a rounded thicket and can be coppiced every few years to increase nut production. In July, female flowers mature into egg-shaped, edible nuts. Quail, grouse, wild turkey, blue jays, squirrel and deer feed on various parts of the plant. Fall color varies from combinations of orange, rose, purplish red, yellow and green to dull yellowish green. Good for windbreak, wildlife shelter, and shrub borders.
