The American Persimmon is a medium-sized tree that reaches 50 in height. Expect pale yellow blooms May through June. Prefers dry to moderate soil moisture.
Latin name means "fruit of the gods." Can begin producing fruit in year 4 from seed. Need two or more for best fruit set. Beware of chalkmouth—the fruit is extremely astringent when unripe so wait til fully ripe to eat, usually after the first frost. Eat fresh or use them to make delicious Persimmon bread, pudding, syrup, or cookies. Smaller and paler than the Asian persimmons found in grocery stores. Deep taproot, colony forming. Attractive foliage. Great for deer plots, food forests, habitat gardening, or as a specimen.
